I’m no good at party reviews as I usually don’t remember much the next day. Not because of heavy drinking but I just don’t remember majority besides a few stand out moments. Plus I’m enjoying myself who cares what’s happening around me? However, I’ll give it a try. The guys at Urban have been delivering quality parties since the inception. Following with the usual ‘Spring Break’ theme the 2014 edition was no different.

Been a while since I’ve been anywhere. I could put the blame on this. However I chose to blow off some steam and catch gospel/hip-hop artiste Adaeze’s concert at Champions Sport’s Bar. Yeah, where dum iz hol’ Floetry Fridays. I was excited to see what was in store from the colorful lighting set on the stage, merch table by the door and the buzzing crowd just lounging waiting on the show to start. I was however disappointed that the bartender intended that I was to enjoy this performance with a dry mout’.

Its safe to say that 2013 was the year of Matt Cruz as no other rapper, or artist in general, kept delivering quality content as often as him. Twelve videos in twelve months sounds like a crazy idea doesn’t it ? I mean, some artistes don’t even have 12 videos in their entire career! But the driven Cruz was out to prove a point with ‘#twelveintwelve’.

During the week I saw the poster for a poetry and open mic event called “Floetry Fridays” on my timeline and since I was in the vicinity I decided to go check it out. Like a typical bajan I arrived 2 hours after the advertised time of 8pm. Upon entrance of Champion’s Sports Bar, I did a quick scan of the room and observed the patrons littered across the room. Some of them were either engaged in conversation, playing pool on the deck outside, or redeeming one(or both) of the two drinks your $10 gets you at the door.

Ok, so 2013 passed and little Miss Sunshine didn’t drop a new album for the masses.  One blog went as far as to declare 2013 didn’t count because there was no Rihanna album . I bet some of us didn’t realize this. Running off the strength of her seventh studio album ‘Unapologetic’, released on November 2012, Ri was still heavy on the airways due to album singles “Diamonds”, “Stay”, “What Now”, “Pour It Up”, “Loveee Song (feat. Future)”, and her collaboration with David Guetta “Right Now”.
The absence of a major release was  also hard to notice due to her maintaining relevancy through her social media dominance, breaking tour and chart records and picking up an Icon award in the process. This has actually been the longest period Rihanna has gone without releasing music since 2007.  She has been releasing one album per year between 2005 and 2012 (’08 was a re-release of Good Girl Gone Bad).

246mixtapes is back on the search again this time we looking fuh everybody’s favourite psycho Matrix Man! Now before you say he’s better off wherever he is rather than recording, just let it be known that no other Barbadian dancehall artiste dominated 2012 as much as the Matrix man. Apparently he has been on the underground scene for a while but due to the rise in popularity of uploading music via Facebook, Matrix first piqued interest with his multi-artist,and ironic, diss song “Bare R******e”. Think of 50 cent’s “How To Rob”.

Hate it or love it, Hip Hop music has a major fan base in our small island. The genre, birthed out of the Bronx in New York City during the 70’s, is regularly featured during fetes and our radio stations mostly outside of the Crop Over season. In that percentage of the fan base, a few (but respectable) amount of people are in tuned to the works of local rappers.
Hate it or love it, the biggest local rapper is none other than the critically acclaimed Teff Mayweather. With his bravado and wit, Teff has dominated the scene from Burberry Cologne to DreamWorld.
